THE BRAIN
The brain is the
main control centre of the central nervous system. It consists of three major
parts :
The Cerebrum - largest part - wrinkled grey mass divided into
left and right hemispheres. Involved in consciousness and higher functions.
The Cerebellum - small rounded part beneath the cerebrum -
controls complex muscular movements.
Brain Stem - connects brain to spinal cord and controls basic
functions (eg. temperature regulation, anger, fear, etc)
Memory is the ability of the brain to store information
eg. Sensory memory - depends on vision and
only lasts for a short time (eg. navigating around a room in which the lights
have just been
switched off). Controlled by the outer
layer of the cerebrum (cerebral cortex)
Long Term and Short
Term memory - controlled by the Hippocampus
